candistar replied to your post: I want to say sorry to my parents
mason, you’re amazing. i admire you so muchs. even though we don’t talk anymore, i miss you and think of you and our memories a lot. :(Dear Winnie,
When I first met you I thought you were the absolute dumbest asian girl ever. Since then I’ve met many dumber girls than you. But you somehow always always always had a way of making me smile. I remember our CTY days and our days out in the city. You’re really the most innocent and pure girl I’ve ever met. And I don’t mean this in a bad way. You’re so real, and you’re generous. You are one of the most genuine people ever to grace my presence. I miss you more than anyone I met at CTY. I wish you went to school with me even though you’d be a 2013-er. Maybe we can go to college together? haha
Love Mason

Days: Saturday June 13th —> Friday June 18th
Place: Henan in Zhengzhou, China (basically, the middle of nowhere. wheat fields, huts, NO CIVILIZATION D:)
Background: Henan endured an AIDS epidemic in the past two decades. It began very folktale like. Village. Poor people. Oh, modern dude comes by. ‘Sell me your blood. I’ll give you x dollars’ Those x dollars was how much they made in 3 months so they all sold blood. Dirty equipment. HIV. AIDS. Parents died and passed on this disease.
Objective: Meet with the orphans. Get their name. Become penpals throughout the year in order to encourage them to study.
Hmm, i really don’t know where to begin with this. It was such a life changing experience. I guess it can be considered going on a church mission, but there was no God or religion involved and we weren’t going with a church group, but with different families. (My mommy came :D) I’ll just list the stuff we diddd.
Basically, this trip showed me how poor and unfortunate some people could be. Like you see it on TV or hear about it from UNICEF but once you SEE it … it’s so sad.
There was a boy … his father was dead. His mother was getting treatment for her HIV (when they get treatment it takes about 3-6 months in the “city” which is far far away) His brother took care of him but he often was at school. When we visited the boy, his door was boarded up and bricked. We asked him to come out and he crawled out of a HOLE. My first reaction was “OMG HOWD YOU DIG THAT HOLE” but then i saw how many bugs and dirt was all over him and i was like >__<
There was a girl … she was 19 but i thought she was 9. Malnutrition? She could speak a little English. Her parents were both dead from AIDS. She had a twin. Both of them studied like crazy and were extremely kind. Their dream is to travel to America which is near impossible, but they dream of it often.
There was a girl … 10 years old. Her dad died from AIDS and her mother left the family. She lived with her Grandmother. She was one of the “richest” families because they had a garden of fruit. Every day she would give fruit to her friends during lunch. When i visited her house, she held open the “door” (a piece of cloth) for me and handed me a “chair” (it was like a reallyreally small chair less than a foot tall) .. she stood while i sat and talked to her. At the end when we gave her a red envelope (with money) she immediately gave it to her grandma unlike the other children who ran out to spend it.
This has gotten really long. I don’t think anyone is gonna read it but it was a really amazing but sad experience. Hopefully i can go back next year and be able to communicate better. :P
Suzieeeee , i always said “omg i feel so bad for where you live” but now i can see there are worse places too . T__T Dandrew, you always told me to appreciate what i had but i didn’t understand it until now D:
Days: Monday June 7th —> Saturday June 12th
Place: Kansas City, MISSOURI ( not Kansas!! )
Vivian, Andrew, and I were a team for tech prep. We placed 6th which is pretty amazing considering we’re only freshmen and most of the people there are either to-be seniors or graduated. Lucas and Emma were also freshmen who went. 5 freshmen. Pretty amazing <3 (And like 10 other upperclass men + Chef B + Mr. Lang x])
Highlights of the trip:
Hopefully we make nationals again next year.. :D
